I attended the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast this week, and I left feeling proud of Columbus.

Each year, this gathering gives us a moment to pause, not only to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., but to see how that legacy is being lived out here at home.

One speaker shared the event’s theme, “I Am My Brother’s Keeper,” explaining that it speaks to how we care for one another as neighbors and friends. Speakers also described the breakfast as an opportunity to celebrate Columbus as a community that lives out Dr. King’s message of unity and service, and to “recognize how far we’ve come and how much we can continue to do together.”

That message came to life as several students were honored with scholarships for their hard work, leadership, and service. Their recognition reflected not only individual achievement, but the support of families, educators, and a community that values effort and commitment.

The morning was a reminder that celebration matters, and that recognizing achievement helps a community see itself clearly and confidently.

I’m grateful I could be there, and grateful for a city that takes time to honor its people.
