A Night at the Sentinels Game — And What It Means for Columbus

On Saturday, November 29, I had the honor of stepping onto the ice at the Hamilton Community Center & Ice Arena to drop the ceremonial puck for our hometown team, the Indiana Sentinels. As both a City Councilman for District 6 and an Air Force veteran, participating in Military Appreciation Weekend was an especially meaningful moment. The arena was packed, the energy was high, and Columbus once again showed why our community is strong and unified.

The match up against the Blue Ridge Bobcats was a thriller, tied 2–2 at the end of regulation and ultimately decided in an overtime battle. While the Sentinels fought hard and came up just short, the determination and resiliency they displayed is exactly why this franchise is such an exciting addition to Columbus.

The Role of the Indiana Sentinels in Our Community

The arrival of the Sentinels is more than just the addition of a professional hockey team, it represents the beginning of a new chapter in Columbus’s growth. The team joined the Federal Prospects Hockey League earlier this year, playing its inaugural season right here in our hometown while a larger 2,500-seat arena is already in planning. This expansion aligns with the city’s focus on strengthening sports tourism, enhancing quality of life, and providing diverse entertainment options for residents.

What we’ve seen in just a short time reflects findings from cities across the country: professional sports bring tremendous value to their communities.

Social & Intangible Benefits

Professional sports bring something valuable—connection.

A team becomes a shared symbol of civic pride. It brings residents together regardless of background, politics, or status. It lifts morale, strengthens community identity, and gives us something to root for side-by-side. Teams engage in charitable work, support youth development, and create opportunities for families to bond over a common passion.

The Sentinels are already doing this. Their partnership with IU Columbus is creating new experiences for students, promoting athletics, and expanding community involvement. Their commitment to honoring military service members this past weekend is just one example.

A Bright Future Ahead

Our city is growing, and the Indiana Sentinels are part of that growth, offering a new source of pride, entertainment, and community identity. Their historic first franchise win earlier this month, an unforgettable 9–3 victory over Port Huron, shows they have the talent and drive to make this inaugural season one to remember.

As your Councilman, I am proud to support the Sentinels and the positive momentum they bring to Columbus. The Sentinels return to home ice on December 19 and 20, facing off against the
Watertown Wolves. Visit the team’s official website for more details. I encourage everyone to come out to a game, cheer them on, and be part of this exciting new chapter. Whether you’re a lifelong hockey fan or attending your very first game, I promise, you’ll feel the energy, the community spirit, and the pride that makes Columbus such a special place to live.

See you at the rink! 🏒
Jay
